The programme assumes basic knowledge of electrical engineering

The programme assumes basic knowledge of electrical engineering (e.g., basic transistors and logic design, digital signal processing, systems and control).
The programme provides in-depth training in software and hardware design of electronic systems, with an emphasis either on circuit design or application design. In the option 'Electronics and Integrated Circuits', you will learn how to design and create electronic and integrated circuits for a wide range of electronic systems in telecommunications, audio- and sensor applications, biomedical systems and power electronics. In the option 'Embedded Systems and Multimedia', focus is placed on the design of novel applications.
This encompasses the processing, transmission and security aspects of digital signals (with emphasis on multimedia) and their implementation in embedded systems. Your Master's thesis project, carried out in close cooperation with the department's on-going research, will expose you to the cutting-edge research topics in these fields.

The programme builds on the Bachelor of Science in Engineering at KU Leuven. The first part of the Bachelor offers general education in basic sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry) in combination with a number of well-chosen technical basic courses, of which - for electrical engineering - Electrical Circuits, Communication and Information Theory, and Informatics are seen as an absolute minimum. The second part of the Bachelor introduces the theoretical basic knowledge of electrical engineering. The foundations are Electrical Energy, Semiconductor Devices, Electronic Circuits, Digital Electronics, Digital Signal Processing, Systems and Control Theory, Digital and Analog Communication, and Electromagnetic Waves. To acquire design experience, the students must become acquainted with the different topics in a joint project, in which they design the different basic components of a system. Here, the different aspects of the basic courses will be experienced in practice.
